April 20, 2010. Chinese government announces day of mourning after death toll passes 2,000

China announced plans for a national day of mourning to take place on April 21st to commemorate the more than 2,039 victims of a magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale earthquake in Qinghai province, reports indicated on April 20th. Rescue workers, Tibetan monks, and army units rushed to find the 195 people still missing, to build temporary shelters, and provide relief to refugees and the injured as officials warned weather conditions are expected to deteriorate in this isolated part of China, bringing rain, snow, and low temperatures.
